K9 Unit
This is K-9 Atticus. K-9 Atticus is partners with Sgt. Jeff Turner.
Atticus has been serving the Union City Police Department for several years and is responsible for multiple drug arrests in our area.
Our K-9 program is funded solely on donations and have become a great asset to our community.

Bruno is a Belgian Malinois and has been serving the Union City community for the past several years. He too is responsible for several seizures of drugs off the streets of our community.

We are very appreciative of the supporters to our K-9 program. Without donations we wouldn’t be able to operate our K-9 program at no cost to the taxpayers!

Sgt. Turner has been training police K-9’s for several years. Sgt. Turner is currently one of the two K-9 handlers for our department. Sgt. Turner’s K-9 partner’s name is Atticus. They have been serving the community together since 2017.
Sgt. Turner’s hobbies include, jet-skiing, hunting, weightlifting, boxing and boating.
When asked why he chose a career In law enforcement, Sgt. Turner said, “I transitioned from the Fire Service to law enforcement and did both for many years. I have always had a passion for law enforcement and helping others. I feel like I have to leave my community I serve a better place than when I arrived, so I try to make a positive impact on my community every day.”

Patrolman Jonathan Gilbert is a 2007 graduate of Mississinawa Valley High School. He graduated from Edison Community College Police Academy where he also obtained an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

Patrolman Jonathan Gilbert is a 2007 graduate of Mississinawa Valley High School. He graduated from Edison Community College Police Academy where he also obtained an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
He started his career with the Union CIty Police Department in 2010. He served on the UCO police department until 2013. He returned to the department in 2017 and still continues to serve as a part time patrolman.
He enjoys hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, camping, weight lifting, videography, photography, woodworking, and enjoying the great outdoors.
Plt Gilbert says “As long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a law enforcement officer. I have a passion to make a difference in the community I grew up in. In this line of work, I realize the importance and significance of protecting and serving the community.
We strive to help those in need and help those on the road to recovery. Law enforcement may not always be easy but if we have made a difference in one life then it is all worth it.”

Patrolman Justn Miller is a 2019 graduate of Mississinawa Valley High School and recently completed his Peace Officer Training at Wright State Lake Campus.
He enjoys hunting, fishing, wakeboarding, and blacksmithing.

Chief Ater is a 2005 graduate of Miami Trace Local Schools. Chief Ater graduated from the Clark State Police Academy in 2005 and started in law enforcement shortly after graduation.

Chief Ater is a 2005 graduate of Miami Trace Local Schools. Chief Ater graduated from the Clark State Police Academy in 2005 and started in law enforcement shortly after graduation.
Chief Ater has been with the the Union City Police Department for over 10 years and was promoted to Chief of Police in 2016. Chief Ater is a paramedic/firefighter and also serves as Fire Chief for the Union City Fire Department. Chief Ater also has K9 Bruno and is active in the departments K-9 Program.
Chief Ater’s hobbies include, harness horse racing, traveling, and spending time with his two sons. Chief Ater also works part time as a Paramedic for Careflight Air & Mobile in Dayton, Ohio.
Chief Ater chose a career in law enforcement so that he could make a positive difference in others lives, especially the lives of the children in our community. Chief Ater is very passionate about standing up for children that fall victim to crimes.
Chief Ater appreciates all of the officers dedication to our community.
