THE PACE IS SLOWER
Big-city visitors occasionally point out that things move at a different pace here. We aren't offended. We enjoy a little high-energy now and then, and can find it easily enough in Cincinnati, Indy or Chicago. But we've decided against an adrenaline-fueled lifestyle. So you can take a few extra minutes with your morning coffee or your weekly friend-lunch or your evening beverage. Play your favorite sport daily rather than weekly. And know that you will never get a migraine or be late for an event because of a traffic jam at Columbia and Oak.
YOU FEEL SAFER
Crime rates are low. Excellent police and fire departments are nearby and do an excellent job of teaching safety, including extensive interaction with young people. Regional hospitals are close. Leading diagnostic, surgical and specialty hospitals are 90 minutes away.
SECLUSION OR PARTICIPATION ARE CHOICES
Some seeking change are ready for a life with fewer interactions. That's common, and OK. There's no Union City Social Committee seeking recruits. But there are many ways to engage, as basic as interacting with neighbors who will surprise you with their friendliness, to becoming active in the many programs and causes that are available. "Union City gave me a chance to participate rather than spectate," was the comment of one of our highly-involved move-ins. A similar opportunity is available to students who can participate in sports, music or theater rather than be lost in the big-school shuffle.
YOU CAN EXPAND YOUR WORLD IF YOU WANT TO
Non-metro counties are treasure troves. There is plenty to do in your hometown, but 15 to 30 minutes away are other small towns with their own unique shops, attractions, worthy causes, golf courses and colorful people.
WE DON'T TRY VERY HARD TO IMPRESS EACH OTHER
Union City is not a wealthy town; definitely true since the era of major plant closings, but on our wealthiest day, no one was bragging much about clothes, cars and jewelry. It's just not part of the culture, and that's a good thing for adults, even better for kids. And it saves about $50,000 plus interest and upkeep if a person can drive from here to there in a Chevy instead of a BMW.
PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THEIR FAITH
We're not confrontational about it, people aren't preaching at each other. But we think it's okay to believe in God and say so out loud, even to pray for each other during times of crisis or celebration.
WE HELP EACH OTHER
Neighbors soon become friends who are willing to help each other in matters large and small. Our city government is service focused. Our police and fire departments spend time and energy working with kids and adults promoting safe practices and strong character.
WE WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE OUR TOWN
It is well known that small-town America has taken some hard-hits economically. Some have been defeated. Some are fighting back. Union City is actively innovating. We participate in beautification. We have maintained a school system of remarkable quality by any standard. We are looking optimistically to the future.
